AirTag location history guides

Getting Started & Core Features

Step-by-step setup, account connection, viewing, exporting, and sharing your AirTag location history.

Connecting your Apple ID to AirTag History

What the connect step does: it records only tags on the Apple ID you sign in with, never persists the plaintext password, and needs Apple's two-factor code.
How to set up AirTag history tracking

Create an account, connect the Apple ID that owns your tags, pass two-factor, and recording starts: every tag on that account, polled every 5 minutes.
AirTag location history: what it is and how to see it

An AirTag location history is a timestamped record of every Find My sighting. Find My keeps none of it. Here is what one contains and how to get one.
How do you export AirTag location history?

Three formats and three audiences: CSV for the raw rows, GPX for mapping software, and a timestamped PDF evidence report for a claim. Which to send to whom.
How to share AirTag location history

Export it and send it: CSV, GPX, or a timestamped PDF evidence report. Which format suits an adjuster, a mover or a baggage desk, and what to say about time.
What is the AirTag History evidence report?

A timestamped PDF of one tag's recorded route: every report with time and coordinates, stops flagged, gaps left visible. What is in it, and what it is for.
How to choose an AirTag history time range

Pick the narrowest window that contains the disputed event, not the whole month. How to read gaps, and what decides how far back you can look.

Find My Mechanics & Technical Behavior

How the Find My network works, update frequency, location accuracy, coverage gaps, and battery limits.

Find My location history: where it exists, and where it doesn't

Find My shows one pin, never a history. Where your location history does live on iPhone and Google Maps, and how to keep one for your AirTags.
How the Find My network works

Your AirTag has no GPS. A passing stranger's iPhone hears it and files an encrypted report only you can read. Each step, and why updates are irregular.
AirTag "last seen" vs location history: what's the difference?

"Last seen" is one timestamp and one pin, overwritten by the next report. A location history is the ordered series of reports behind it. Here is the difference.
How often does an AirTag update its location?

There is no interval. A point appears only when a passing iPhone hears the tag. The two clocks behind an irregular update rate, and why neither is adjustable.
How accurate is an AirTag's location?

An AirTag point is the relaying phone's position, not a measurement of the tag. What that means for accuracy, and why a point can be a building off and still hold.
Why is my AirTag not updating its location?

Usually nobody with an iPhone has walked past it. The four real causes of a stalled AirTag, ordered by how likely they are, and how to tell them apart.
What a gap in AirTag location history means

A gap is an absence of sightings, not an absence of movement. How to read one, why we never draw a line through it, and how to describe it to a claims desk.
Why an AirTag goes silent on an ocean crossing

Mid-ocean there is nobody to relay a sighting, so no location exists. How long the silence runs, why coverage returns at the destination port, and what it means.
How AirTag battery life shows up in location history

An AirTag runs about a year on a coin cell. What a dying battery looks like in a recorded history, why it mimics an empty warehouse, and when to change it.
Do AirTags work abroad?

There is no roaming and no SIM to arrange. An AirTag works anywhere there are iPhones nearby, which makes coverage a question of crowds rather than countries.
Does the macOS Find My cache still show location history?

No. The Mac Find My cache once held a short window of recent AirTag reports. macOS Tahoe ended that. Here is what it was and what replaces it now.

Claims, Proof & Legal Admissibility

Using timestamped location history as evidence for insurance claims, delivery disputes, police reports, and legal proof.

Is AirTag location data admissible as proof?

It depends on the forum, and this is not legal advice. What any record gets asked, what a tag's route actually shows, and why a claims desk usually decides.
Can AirTag location history support an insurance claim?

What an adjuster usually asks for, and where a timestamped AirTag timeline fits. It speaks to when and where, not to what was in the box, or what it was worth.
How do you use AirTag history in a delivery dispute?

Marked delivered but never at your address? Read the recorded coordinates against the address, name the exact rows, and write the email a courier will act on.
What to do when something with an AirTag is stolen

Report it, hand over the recorded timeline, and do not go to the address yourself. What a timestamped record shows, what to export, and what it cannot prove.
My movers lost my shipment. Can an AirTag prove where it went?

It can show where your tag was seen and when. Check your own record first, then send dated coordinates rather than accusations. That is what moves a case.
Using AirTag history in a lost luggage claim

When the airline's baggage system and your AirTag disagree, a timestamped timeline is the document that settles it. What to record, and what it proves.
Is it legal to track with an AirTag?

Tracking property you own is the ordinary case. Tracking a person without their knowledge is where the law gets serious, and the rules vary by jurisdiction.
Are AirTags safe? AirTag anti-stalking protections

AirTags rotate their Bluetooth identity, chirp when separated from their owner, and trigger unknown-tracker alerts on nearby phones. What to do if one finds you.
AirTag unknown tracker alerts: what they mean

An unknown tracker alert means a tag that is not yours has been moving with you. What it means, what it does not mean, and the safest order to do things in.
AirTag data privacy: what we store

We store latitude, longitude and a timestamp for each location report, plus the encrypted session tokens needed to keep polling. Never your Apple ID password.
AirTag tracking: things versus people

Recorded AirTag history is for luggage, boxes, vehicles and tools. Putting a tag on a person is a safety problem before it is a legal one, and we prohibit it.

Moving, Travel & Luggage

Tracking household moves, airline luggage, cruises, international container shipments, and vehicle transport.

Tracking a shipment or a move with an AirTag

What an AirTag shows on a move, car shipment, parcel, or container: where reports fill in, where they go silent, and how to keep the route as proof.
How do you use AirTags to track a move?

Use more tags than feels necessary, spread them across separate boxes, and start recording before pickup day. Here is where to put them and what you will see.
What does an AirTag in a moving truck actually show?

Frequent reports on highways and in towns, quiet nights in a yard, and long stops at warehouses. Here is how to read a moving truck's map without panicking.
Can you track an international container move with an AirTag?

Partly. Expect reports at the origin warehouse and the ports, weeks of silence at sea, then reports again on arrival. Here is what each leg looks like.
Can you track a military PCS move with an AirTag?

Often yes, but rules vary by branch and destination, so check guidance first. Here is what a PCS shipment looks like on a map, storage gaps and all.
AirTag luggage tracking history

Find My shows one pin for a checked bag and overwrites it. The useful fact is the route: where the bag sat, for how long, and which airport it never left.
Can you put an AirTag in checked baggage?

Yes, in almost every case. An AirTag's coin cell is far below the battery thresholds airline rules are written around. Carrier rules still vary, so check yours.
Does an AirTag work on a cruise ship?

Often, while people are aboard. But the position you see is wherever the relaying phone thought it was, and once the ship sails those phones lose their link.
Tracking a car shipment with an AirTag

A tag in the cabin reports well on an open trailer and not at all on a vehicle deck. Where to put it, and what the carrier's status updates leave out.

Asset & Fleet Tracking

Tailored guides for vehicles, bicycles, parcels, freight containers, small business equipment, and pets.

Can an AirTag track your car?

An AirTag in your car gives you a route, not a live GPS feed. Where to hide one, what the history actually shows, and how it compares to a wired tracker.
AirTag bike theft: what a recorded route shows

A tag on a stolen bike records where it went after it was taken, not just where it sits now. What the route shows, where it goes blank, and who to give it to.
Putting an AirTag in a package: what the history shows

A tag in the box is a second, independent record of where a parcel went. Here is how it lines up with the carrier's scans, and what a mismatch means.
AirTag freight container tracking: what you actually get

Steel blocks Bluetooth and a container yard has nobody in it at night. What a tag in freight gives you is stages: port, gate, yard and road, not a route.
Do AirTags work for tracking tools and site equipment?

Tags on tools, trailers and generators cost pennies a month and never need charging. Where they work, where a steel container kills them, and the limits.
Are AirTags good pet trackers?

No. An AirTag has no GPS and no live position. It only reports when someone else's phone walks past. Where a collar tag helps, and when to buy a GPS collar.

Comparisons & Alternatives

Comparing AirTags and AirTag History against GPS trackers, Tile, SmartTags, dedicated asset trackers, and other software.

AirTag vs GPS tracker: what's the difference?

An AirTag has no GPS. It borrows other people's iPhones; a GPS tracker pays for satellites and a SIM. Cost, accuracy, cadence, battery and coverage compared.
AirTag vs GPS tracker for shipping and freight

A cellular tracker reports from an empty yard and, on satellite, mid-ocean. An AirTag costs a fraction and needs no SIM. Which one a shipment actually needs.
AirTag vs a dedicated asset tracker for business

An asset tracker reports from an empty yard and bills you monthly. An AirTag reports only when someone walks past and bills you never. Which wins which job.
AirTag vs Tile vs Samsung SmartTag

All three are Bluetooth tags located by other people's phones. The difference is whose phones, and none of the three keeps a location history.
Best AirTag location history tools: what to look for

Six things to check in anything that records AirTag history: polling, retention, export, gap handling, credentials, and when recording starts.
AirTag history app alternatives, compared

The Mac cache is dead, screenshots are manual, Shortcuts cannot read a tag. The four things people try for AirTag history, and how each one fails.
