Does an AirTag work on a cruise ship?
Usually, in port and often for a while after. A cruise ship is a floating concentration of iPhones, so a tag in a cabin bag gets reported frequently while people are aboard and connected. Once the ship is at sea those phones have no cellular fix and no way to upload, so reports thin out and then stop. Port calls come back as sharp clusters.
Will a tag on board report at all?
Usually yes, and better than people expect. A cruise ship is one of the densest concentrations of Apple devices you will ever put a bag inside: thousands of passengers, most of them within Bluetooth range of your cabin at some point in the day.
Density is only half of what a location report needs, though. The device that hears the tag also has to be able to send the sighting onward, and that is the half a ship quietly removes as soon as it leaves the berth.
Whose location are you actually looking at?
The relaying phone's. An AirTag has no GPS and never knows where it is; what gets reported is a nearby Apple device's estimate of its own position at the moment it heard the tag, encrypted and passed up to Apple.
On land that distinction rarely matters, because the phone is standing more or less where the tag is. On a ship it matters a great deal, because the whole environment is moving and the phones are working from whatever they last managed to establish.
A report can therefore describe the pier you left rather than the water you are on. Read the timestamp on any position before you treat it as current. On a cruise, that habit saves a lot of confusion.
What happens once the ship leaves port?
Two things go at once. Phones drop off shore networks, which takes away both their easiest way of working out where they are indoors and their route to the internet. Many passengers then put their phones into airplane mode for the week specifically to avoid roaming charges at sea.
- No cell towers, so a phone deep inside a steel hull has little to position itself from.
- No mobile data, so even a sighting that happens has nowhere to go.
- Airplane mode by choice, on a large share of the phones aboard.
- Ship Wi-Fi that is satellite-backed, often paid for, and not switched on by everybody.
The result is reports that thin out over the first hours out of port and then stop. The tag is fine, the bag is fine, and the silence means nobody around it had a working connection, which at sea is the normal state of affairs, not a fault.
What does a whole cruise look like in the history?

Port calls are the useful part of that shape. A few hundred people walking ashore with reconnecting phones produces a tight, well-timestamped cluster at each stop, which is often enough to show that a bag was still aboard at every port the ship visited.
The gaps between clusters are real gaps. We show them as gaps rather than drawing a line across the ocean, because an invented line between two real points is the thing that would make the record worthless the moment somebody checked it.
What is an AirTag on a cruise actually good for?
Bags, and specifically the moments when they are out of your hands. Cruise luggage gets handed over at the pier and appears outside a cabin hours later, which is exactly the window where one pin and no history is unsatisfying.

What it is not good for is the ship. If you want to know where the vessel is, the vessel already publishes that far better than a second-hand Bluetooth sighting ever will.
Can you keep track of a person on board with one?

The practical answer is the same as the ethical one. A tag on a ship at sea reports rarely and imprecisely, so anyone imagining a live dot following a family member around a vessel is imagining a product that does not exist.
How do you end up with the record afterwards?
Something has to write the reports down while they arrive. Find My shows one pin and overwrites it, so the sequence of port clusters that would show where a bag was is discarded in real time, and Apple keeps no readable history on its servers to hand back later.

It can, indirectly. The tag never uses Wi-Fi itself, but a passenger's phone connected to the ship's network has a route to the internet and can pass a sighting on. Whether that happens depends on how many people have paid for and enabled it, so treat any at-sea report as a bonus rather than an expectation.
Can I track my checked cruise luggage with an AirTag?
That is the strongest use for one. Bags handed over at the pier reappear at a cabin door hours later, and both ends of that journey are dense with phones. A recorded timeline shows when the bag was at the terminal and when it reached the ship, which is more than the single pin Find My keeps.
