AirTag vs GPS tracker: what's the difference?
An AirTag has no GPS. It is a Bluetooth beacon that gets located when someone else's iPhone walks past and relays a report. A GPS tracker works out its own position from satellites and sends it over a cellular network on a schedule you choose. Borrowed coverage versus paid-for coverage decides almost everything else about the two.
What actually happens when each one reports?
The AirTag never knows where it is. It shouts a rotating identifier over Bluetooth, and if an iPhone happens to be within range, that iPhone attaches its own location to the sighting, encrypts it, and uploads it. No passer-by, no report.
The GPS tracker does the opposite. It listens to satellites, works out its own coordinates, and pushes them over a mobile network on a timer you set. Nobody has to walk past it. It needs sky for the satellites and signal for the upload, and it burns power doing both.
Everything below follows from that one difference. The AirTag is cheap and long-lived because it does almost nothing; the GPS tracker is dependable and expensive because it does all the work itself.

Where does the GPS tracker plainly win?
Anywhere there is no crowd. This is not a close call, and it is worth saying flatly before anyone spends money on the wrong thing.
- Rural routes, private land, quarries, farms and depots where an hour can pass with nobody walking by.
- A guaranteed reporting interval, which matters when the absence of a report has to mean something.
- Alerts and geofences: leaving a yard, entering a postcode, moving at 3am.
- Extra sensors: temperature for a reefer, shock for fragile freight, ignition for a vehicle.
- Live pursuit. If a van is being driven away right now, a minute-by-minute feed beats waiting for a stranger to walk past it.
Where does the AirTag plainly win?
- Price. You can put one in every suitcase and every box without a purchase order.
- Battery. A year of standby on a replaceable cell, with nothing to recharge before a trip.
- No contract, no SIM, no activation, no per-device admin.
- Density in the places most things actually go: airports, cities, motorways, ports, sorting hubs.
- Discretion. A coin in a lining does not look like tracking hardware and does not need a power source near it.
For a household move, a checked bag, or a box crossing a continent by road, the crowd is usually thick enough that the cheap option and the expensive one tell you nearly the same story.
What does each one really cost to run?
An AirTag is a one-off purchase and a coin cell a year later. There is no subscription attached to the tag itself, because there is no network operator to pay. The network is other people's phones.
A GPS tracker has two prices, and the second one is the one people forget: the hardware, then a recurring data or platform fee per device, usually billed monthly or annually. Ten trackers means ten of those fees, every month, whether or not anything moved.
That is why the honest question is not "which is better" but "how many of these do I need, and for how long". One asset for three weeks and fifty assets forever are different problems with different answers.
Which one for a single move or trip?
For a one-off, such as a relocation, a flight or a car on a transporter, the AirTag is usually the right call. The route runs through populated places, the duration is weeks rather than years, and nobody wants to sign a contract for a single container.
Buy the GPS tracker when the asset is valuable enough that a six-hour silence is unacceptable, or when the route deliberately avoids people. A generator on a remote site is a GPS job. A wardrobe box on a moving truck is not.
Does either one keep a location history?
Most GPS platforms do. History is the product, and it usually comes with the subscription you are already paying.
Find My does not. It shows the most recent report as a single pin and overwrites it, so there is no route, no timeline, and no export. Apple keeps nothing readable on its servers either: the reports are end-to-end encrypted to your Apple ID.
That gap is what AirTag History fills.
