How the Find My network works

The Find My network turns every passing iPhone into a finder. Your AirTag broadcasts a rotating Bluetooth identifier; a stranger's iPhone hears it, encrypts its own location with your tag's key, and uploads that to Apple. Only your Apple ID can decrypt it. Nothing polls the tag, which is why updates arrive when they arrive.

What happens when your AirTag gets seen

Four things, in order, none of which involve your AirTag knowing anything about it. The tag never learns it was spotted and never receives an acknowledgement. It shouts into the dark on a loop and that is its entire job.

  1. The AirTag broadcasts a short Bluetooth advertisement carrying an identifier that rotates on a schedule, so it cannot be followed around by anyone watching for a fixed address.
  2. Some nearby Apple device, usually a stranger's iPhone, hears the advertisement and works out its own position.
  3. That device encrypts its position using a key derived from what the tag broadcast, and uploads the result to Apple, filed under an opaque identifier rather than under your name.
  4. Your Apple ID asks Apple for reports matching identifiers it knows your tag would have used, and decrypts them locally. Only then does a location exist as a location.

Why nobody in the middle can read the report

The finder iPhone encrypts the position before it leaves the phone, using material the tag itself broadcast. The phone that filed the report cannot read it back. It knows it helped, not who it helped or where the tag ended up.

Apple stores ciphertext filed under a rotating identifier. It does not hold a map of your AirTag, cannot produce one on request, and cannot be compelled to hand over a trail it never had in readable form. This is also why Apple has no history to give you.

The decryption happens on the owner's side, which is the reason a history service has to be signed in as you. Nobody can build a history of a tag registered to somebody else's Apple ID, however much they want to.

Why updates arrive at irregular intervals

Nothing schedules a sighting. There is no server that decides to check on your tag every ten minutes, because there is nothing to check: the position does not exist anywhere until a phone happens to walk into range and file it.

So the update interval is not a setting anyone controls. It is a measure of how many iPhones passed near your AirTag in the last hour. In a train station that is a lot. In a locked overnight depot it can be none, for hours, and the tag is working perfectly the whole time.

What makes a place good or bad for the network

  • Excellent: city streets, airport terminals, apartment buildings, busy roads, anywhere people queue.
  • Adequate: suburbs, motorway routes in daylight, a warehouse with staff walking the aisles.
  • Poor: a closed yard at night, a rural road, the inside of a sealed steel container, which is both empty of phones and a bad radio environment.
  • Nothing at all: mid-ocean. A container ship crossing the Atlantic may produce a couple of reports in ten days, filed when it passes something.

None of this is a fault to troubleshoot. A tag in a quiet place behaves exactly like a tag in a busy place; the difference is entirely in who walked past it.

What the network is good at, and what it was never for

It was built to answer one question well: where is the thing I have misplaced, right now. For keys under a sofa cushion or a bag left in a taxi, crowdsourced sightings and a single pin are an elegant and genuinely private answer.

It was not built to produce a record. There is no acknowledgement, no guaranteed interval, no delivery promise, and deliberately no stored trail. Treating it as a fleet tracker sets you up to be disappointed by a system that is doing what it was designed to do.

What this means if you want a location history

Yes, wherever iPhones are. The tag has no SIM and no roaming, so there are no data charges and nothing to enable. Coverage simply follows iPhone density, which means a European city works about as well as an American one and an empty stretch of road works badly in both.

Can I make my AirTag report more often?

Not really. Nothing on the tag or in an app controls the rate, because the rate is decided by whoever walks past. Placing a tag where signal escapes, near the outside of a box rather than under dense metal, helps a little. Polling the network harder does not create sightings.

Why does my AirTag show a location from an hour ago?

Because that is when the last phone walked past it. Find My shows the most recent report available, however old, with the age attached. An hour-old position usually means an hour of nobody nearby rather than an hour of the tag failing to work.
